How the discount is calculated

The savings equal the original price multiplied by the discount percentage divided by 100. The sale price is the original price minus those savings, which is the same as original price × (1 − discount ÷ 100). For example, 25% off $80 saves $20 and leaves a sale price of $60.

How a discount lowers the price A bar showing the original price split into savings and the sale price you pay. Original price Sale price (you pay) Savings Sale price = original × (1 − percent off ÷ 100)
The percent off is removed from the original price to leave the sale price.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate a discount?

Multiply the original price by the discount percentage divided by 100 to get the savings, then subtract that from the original price. 20% off $50 saves $10, leaving $40.

What is the formula for sale price?

Sale price = original price × (1 − discount percentage ÷ 100). A 25% discount means you pay 75% of the original price.

How do I calculate the percentage I saved?

Divide the amount saved by the original price and multiply by 100. Saving $15 on a $60 item is 25% off.

Does this discount calculator include tax?

No. It calculates the pre-tax sale price and savings. Sales tax varies by region and is added on top at checkout.

Is my data saved anywhere?
