How the percentage calculations work

To find a percent of a number, multiply the number by the percent and divide by 100. To find what percent one number is of another, divide the first by the second and multiply by 100. To find percentage change, subtract the original value from the new value, divide by the original value, and multiply by 100. A positive change is an increase and a negative change is a decrease.

How do I calculate percentage increase or decrease?

Subtract the original value from the new value, divide by the original, and multiply by 100. Positive is an increase, negative is a decrease.

What happens if the starting value is zero?

Percentage change cannot be calculated from a starting value of zero because it would divide by zero. Use a non-zero original value.
