How the fuel cost calculation works

To find how much fuel you need, divide the trip distance by your vehicle's miles per gallon. Multiply the gallons by the price per gallon to get the total fuel cost. Dividing that cost by the distance gives the cost per mile. A 300 mile trip at 30 MPG needs 10 gallons; at 4 dollars per gallon that is 40 dollars total, or about 13 cents per mile.

How distance, MPG, and price make total fuel cost Distance divided by MPG gives gallons, which multiply by price to give total fuel cost. Distance ÷ MPG × price = total fuel cost
Distance over MPG gives gallons; gallons times price gives the total cost.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the fuel cost for a trip?

Divide the trip distance by your vehicle's miles per gallon to find the gallons needed, then multiply by the price per gallon. For a 300 mile trip at 30 MPG and 4 dollars per gallon, you need 10 gallons, costing 40 dollars.

What is cost per mile?

Cost per mile is the total fuel cost divided by the trip distance. It tells you how much fuel you use for each mile driven, which is handy for comparing routes or budgeting reimbursements.

Where do I find my car's MPG?

Many cars display average MPG on the dashboard. You can also estimate it by dividing miles driven by gallons used at your last fill-up, or look up your model's rating from the manufacturer.

Does this account for a round trip?

Enter the total distance you plan to drive. If you want a round trip, double the one-way distance before entering it, or simply add both legs together.

Is my data saved anywhere?

No. All calculations run entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter is uploaded or saved on a server.
